This guitar is absolutely stunning, and sounds every bit
as good as it looks. I originally made a matched pair of
these instruments, one in the traditional style and the other
in the new lightweight double back style. The Double Back
Guitar was so successful that I decided to make another with
the same materials. This one is just as good as the first.
Acoustically the double back guitar aids the projection of
the instrument and makes for a very refined sound that is
absolutely fabulous for recording. The arched double back
is somewhat stiffer than the traditional back and this raises
the main air resonance of the instrument. By keeping the
sides the same height as the tradional instruments, this
increases the internal volume because of the arched shape
of the back and this inturn lowers the air resonance back
to where I would like it to be so it works well with the
top resonances. Brazilian Rosewood is a simply stunning material
for the back and sides and these pieces are the extremely
beautiful. It is rare to find timber of this quality today.
This guitar would suit the most discerning of recording artists or concert performer. It has great volume and projection and will fill the largest of halls easily. The Hauser style gives the guitar its own unique flavour. This includes great separation of the notes and great clarity. The balance is also very good along and across the strings. This particluar guitar has a full 19th fret.
This instrument has a truly superb Spruce top, a 650mm scale
length and 52mm nut. The fingerboard is Ebony and the tuning
machines are the gold Gilbert with ebony buttons. The instrument
is easy to play with very good actions set at around the
4mmx3mm standard. The profile of the neck allows ease of
playing and accessibility. The guitar weighs around the same
as a regular classical guitar. My double back instruments
are not constructed like most of the other Australian instruments,
they are built in the same manner as the now popular double
top guitars that are being produced my many other fine makers.
The Brazilian Rosewood on this guitar is very old and Cites
legal. It was acquired long before the Cites ban was even
implemented. The spruce top is many years old and has a very
fine grain with very good medullary content. The top is well
quartered and has no runout. The spruce top, pictured to
the right is of an extremely high quality. The medullary
rays are very prominent and the grain is fine, even and straight.
The top has been French Polished tops and the back and sides
have been lacquered. The beautiful timber on the headstock
is an African timber called Wenge. Wenge is a beautiful timber
and can be used for the back and sides of classical guitars
very successfully. The case is a Hiscox Lite flight case.
These are very good light weight English cases. I do offer
other cases as options.
Brazilian Rosewood and Spruce are regarded by many as the
ultimate timber choices for top level guitars. I have a limited
supply of Brazilian Rosewood and it is getting increasingly
harder to obtain, especially in good quality and the prices
have reached absurd proportions and are still rising. I absorb
much of the extra cost of the Brazilian Rosewood but this
may not be possible if prices continue to rise as they have
done for the last couple of years.
